Faux Golden Ones,
I was shooting the sh!t with my kids the other day about current affairs and the like, and I was talking about how much negative emotional energy is being directed at Elon Musk nowadays, from all corners of the world really.1
I asked them: “How do you think you would feel if half the world hated you right now and were howling about it 24/7 on social media and all that jazz?”2
My daughter piped up and said: “But can’t Donald Trump just pass a law saying it’s illegal to hate on Elon when he becomes president?”
That reminded me of this old song idea I had lying around, “Life Can Be Terrifying,” which is this week’s song addition to the evolving “Mixed Up Files” record which lives over on my Bandcamp page; one could potentially listen to that song for free in the player below right now!
I didn’t write this song technically, I just hit record on the device and these words and woozy guitar sounds came out of my person. I subsequently wrote the words down and claim them as my own, but yeah, kind of a mystery.
Anywho…
The reason I thought of this song, is, as cockamamie a scheme as creating such a law seems, it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility for this guy who’s coming down the pike.
In an ideal world, if the human you wanted to be president doesn’t win, it just kinda feels like driving around with your check engine light on—not the end of the world, but a nagging pain.
But coming from an unhinged place of self-described retribution makes this “kind of a new era”3 seem worse than the check engine light being on. I’m thinking cherries in the rear view plus check engine light on plus you’re way below a quarter tank and the nearest gas station might not be open. Oh, and there’s a train closing in from the east.
And this whole conversation took place before the fires in Los Angeles.
I wrote this song on October 10, 2017—so, during the first term run, pre-retribution.
And the lyrics, printed below, do note that life can be golden.
What was going through my head that day when this song popped into it?
I can’t say for sure, but I checked my photos app and I did take a walk in Nature that day, and I think that helped.
May we all be so lucky as to be able to take a walk in Nature when life seems terrifying.
I remain your humble servant,
OX&C,
Faux Jean
Here are the lyrics for today’s song:
Sometimes life can be terrifying
Sometimes life can be terrifying
Sometimes life can be golden
Sometimes you’re hardly trying
Sometimes you work so hard
Life can be terrifying
The nighttime can seem so dark
Sometimes you’re only playing
And sometimes all you do is work
And life can be terrifying
And it can be golden
Sometimes you don’t even try
And sometimes you work so hard

I wasn’t talking about whether it was justified, which so much of it is, just how it would make you feel to be the object of such manifest disdain.
Sure, Spaceboy has the consolation of being a gazzilionaire, but boy, I might find it hard to sleep at night with so much palpable negative emotional energy swirling in the ether directed at little old me.
As Meta’s owner declared in a video to let the world know fact checking was out moving forward.
