Faux Friends,
Summer’s here and the time is right to begin Volume 5 of “From the Mixed Up Files of Mr. Matthew T. Schindler!”
Here’s the new album cover: (WOOT WOOT!)
And here is track #1, “Kayfabe (feat. Faux Jean.)”
Kayfabe is a word used in pro wrestling which kind of means “fake but in a way that seems real.”1
Pro wrestling acknowledges that it’s putting on a show, and kayfabe dictates that if you are having a feud with Tommy “Wildfire” Rich, you shouldn’t be seen in public enjoying a beer with him, say.
You gotta keep that show going all of the time.
Making it all seem real is extremely important to the bottom line. That’s what gets the kids in the stands screaming their guts out, buying tickets, writing fan letters.
I say that because I did write a fan letter once to Tommy “Wildfire” Rich.
I never sent it because I wasn’t satisfied with my drawing of Tommy.2
His wrist had been “broken” by Jerry Lawler or some such thing in a dirty move and I drew a picture of Tommy with a cast on and wanted to send it to him in support.
I really, really cared about Georgia All-Star Wrestling at that time in the early 80s.
When I see my kids watching crap on Youtube nowadays, I have to remind myself that I put a lot of time and emotion into Georgia All-Star Wrestling, and my parents never bugged me about it.
About this song, though . . .
I made this demo on my beloved Tascam cassette 4-track recorder to hash out the arrangement for a song that wound up being on “Light it Up / Burn it Down,” the 2006 Faux Jean Band release.
That song, “Motown Faux,” had the lyric “If you’re going to live a lie / you might as well do it right.”
That line makes me think of Kayfabe and one of America’s greatest liars, Dumb Donald Trump.3
So I am asking artists to take this instrumental demo, chop it up however you like, and make some anti-Trump music with it.4
Can you do that for me?
I remain your humble servant,
OX&C,
Faux Jean
As an artist who uses a fake name, I can appreciate all of this. Some suggest that “Kayfabe” is bastardized pig Latin for fake.
The only fan mail I ever wrote and I didn’t send it because I was unhappy with my drawing skills. Perfection is the enemy of good.
Who knows all about Kayfabe!
Just keep (feat. Faux Jean) in the title and share songwriting/publishing credit with me & Bohunk Junk Songs (ASCAP).
