Dear Fauxs,
I spent the first five years of my adult life trying to preserve a relationship that I shouldn’t have because I wanted to believe in first love.1
I was a wild idealist.
I was mad, mad, mad!2
If someone treats you poorly and you stay in a relationship, you can start to believe that you’re not worthy of being treated well— you can really start to think less of yourself.3
What started out as a desire to believe in “first love” morphed into a fear of being alone and the unknown, and there’s nothing good about a relationship with that foundation.
I was afraid of breaking away, afraid of change.
When that relationship finally ended, I was sad for sure, but by and by4 I experienced a great sense of liberation and a kind of awakening to my purpose.
I got my groove back.
Today’s song that I am adding to the album of “Mixed up Files” was recorded in 1997 as I was coming out of that storm.5
It is called: “Why Would You Do That to Someone You Love?”
You can listen here as an mp3:
Or you can listen here as a wav file:
There are wild, out-of-tune vocals, and it’s really a bit of a mess, but at least I used a click track.6
I think I shared this demo with my band mates at the time and they were like: “Um, yeahhh, No.” And so this song idea sat as a mixed-up file, collecting magnetic dust for 25 years.
There is a kind of liberation in setting it free today.
And that is the purpose of this here newsletter. I am unburdening myself as a creator.
Thank you for being along for the ride.
Here are the lyrics to “Why would you do that to someone you love?”
Why would you do that to someone you love?
Why would you do that to someone you love?
When hope and hate and envy they conspire on you
To make decisions that will bring you down and
Why would you do that to someone you love?
Why would you do that to someone you love?
I don’t know…
Why would you do that to someone you care for?
Why would you do that to someone you love?
When hope and hate and envy they conspire on you
To laugh and like guilt around you (gibberish)
Why would you do that to someone you love?
Why would you do that to someone you love?
I don’t know
You think you’ve got this game all wrapped up,
Said you’re done but that’s not all you’re cracked to do
All your love and oh your heart is true
But still I have to ask you:
Why would you do that to someone you love?
Why would you do that to someone you care for?
When hope and hate and envy they conspire on you
To say words that hurt so badly and
Why would you do that to someone you love?
Why would you do that to someone you love and care for?
Why would you do that to someone you love?
“I don’t love you anymore” she says, “that’s why.”
“I don’t love you anymore” she says, “that’s why.”
If this song doesn’t get you in the holiday spirit, I don’t know what will.7
December looms, my Faux friends, and this Friday is Bandcamp Friday, which means that if you purchase music from the site where the “Mixed up Files” lives presently, Bandcamp will not take their usual cut, and I get all the filthy lucre.
Think about it.
I am not in it for the money, but still…I remain your humble servant.
OX&C,
Faux Jean
P.s. I came across this image in an email the other day, and it reminded me of my stack of books that I’ve been neglecting:
I actually read an e-book on loan from the San Diego Library using the Libby app, and skipped over my tsundoku completely. I can’t recommend this app enough, or this book:
I could try to put the blame on this movie, but really it was my own damn romantic fault.
A foolish cad, really.
And you become a crappy partner in the process. I certainly was.
“by and by” is one of my favorite Mark Twain-isms.
Sturm und Drang, anyone?
Insert grimace emoji here.
That’s what we call “Dad’s dumb humor” at the Faux Jean household.
